Hibiscus syriacus  

Hibiscus syriacus is a hardy deciduous shrub which grows exotic looking flowers in summer. The flowers are a rich pink/red and trumpet shaped. Hibiscus are fast growing, liking rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Hibiscus have a long winter/spring dormant period and often do not produce their leaves until May/June when they may first appear yellow. These new leaves will quickly darken before the flowers bloom. If left unpruned this shrub can reach 2x3m. Pruning is best done in spring when dormant and this will produce an abundant display of larger flowers from August until October.
