Punica granatum Nana or Dwarf Pomegranate is a variety of the more well-known deciduous shrub/tree which can produce edible pomegranate fruit. It is quite hardy in the UK (-9C), though a sheltered place is recommended for it to fruit properly especially when young. Hard frosts may damage the new spring growth but the pomegranate will re-grow. Planting against a south-facing wall or sheltered location will help. Pomegranates produce beautiful red trumpet-shaped flowers up to 6cm long in summer and it is from these flowers that the fruits emerge. Punica seem to grow well in most soils (well-drained is best) and can be grown in pots. The fruit of 'Nana' are smaller but just as edible and due to the bonsai nature of this plant can be grown easily indoors in a suny spot. They will grow happily outdoors as shrubs but you need a long & hot summer for plenty of flowers and fruit. Available in:
2Litre pots 30-50cm tall as seen in the picture (taken October '08 in fruit and flower grown in a warm environment). 2 plants will be sent for £14.99! 5 Litre 60-70cm.
