Cycas revoluta or Sago Palm is an ancient Cycad that has been around since the dinosaurs roamed the earth and are 'living fossils'. Cycads are not actual palms and although they appear to be palm-like, are actually related to conifers and Ginkgo biloba trees. They are unusual, very slow growing plants with a rugged trunk and stiff, feathery leaves on top. Although they are slow growing, they usually suddenly produce a flush of new leaves and put on a growth spurt, rather than growing all the time. They are very easy to grow and like to be allowed to almost dry out between waterings before keeping moist again. Offsets are produced at the base or from the mature trunk (as seen in the picture) and these can be removed for new plants. Mature plants tolerate frost well and are best grown in full sun. An excellent plant for indoors or out in a sheltered spot.
