Dracunculus vulgaris, Dragon Arum or Voodoo Lily is a very tropical looking plant that is perfectly hardy and an unusual talking point. The foliage is very attractive, however the show stopper has to be the flower or spathe. As this unfurls the purple/black centre spadix emerges and usually reaches 30cm long. The spadix can however reach over a metre long! The plant has one minor disadvantage though. On a mature inflorescence, the smell is reminiscent of rotting meat, designed to attract flies for pollination. The smell only usually lasts for a day but it is still not advisable to plant it right by your house. Grows best in well-drained soil and full-sun to part-shade, giving plenty of water in the growing season.
