Puya chilensis are bromeliads originating from the dry hillsides of Chile and grow at a slow pace. They are perfectly suited for growing indoors and are also suitable to grow in a container or border outside but need protection from winter wet and frosts. This evergreen perennial forms large green rosettes of grey-green strap like leaves edged with hooked spines. The spikes point inwards and outwards and are designed to trap small prey to provide the plant with additional nutrients in the wild. They spread by offsets and after many years will produce green yellow flowers on a tall 2 metre spike resembling a medieval mace. Plant in full-sun or part-shade in well drained soil or containers.
